M:M Music Weekly Update 5/14/2012

AD BANNER
MM staff A Happy post-Mother’s Day to all. From your recaps it sounds like barbeques, manicures, pedicures, flowers, chocolates, phone calls, emails, texts and cards all ran rampant this weekend. And while I tried, there was no way I could top what my little sister and her husband gave our mom…..a brand new grandson named Dylan Edward Matusek (my sister always was a show off). We gave it our best with mom and put together a backyard barbeque with grilled steaks (not eaten because she was feeding the baby), flowers (not smelled because she was burping the baby) and a massive Mother’s Day balloon (quickly put away because if it popped, it would scare the baby). We tried to make our dog Emmett as relevant to his Nana, but he was too busy eating the heads off of the not-smelled-flowers to care. Let the Father’s Day planning commence! (I will not be thwarted twice).

CHART HIGHLIGHTS:
Artists making their mom’s proud over on the chart this week include Alabama Shakes moving up to the #3 spot making a run for #1. Rounding out the Top 10 are Black Keys, Norah Jones, Fun., Imagine Dragons and Eric Hutchinson. Gaining momentum in the Top 15 were Keane, Grace Potter. The Top 20 included Ed Sheeran, Counting Crows and Grouplove. Others making moves up on the chart week were Snow Patrol, Jason Mraz, Delta Spirit and Meiko as the boys from Graffiti6 debut with their follow up “Stare Into the Sun”.

Bonnie Raitt is borrowing the latter portion of her latest title “Used to Rule the World” as she clearly ruled the adds this week and is once again #1 Overall Most Added in the format, is one of this week’s Top 5 Greatest Gainers and, in only the second week at radio, is already New & Active.

OTHERS HAVING STELLAR WEEKS INCLUDED:
Most Added: Bonnie Raitt, Ingrid Michaelson, Alanis Morissette, Grouplove, Ed Sheeran, Matt Nathanson, Black Keys, Joe Walsh
Most Increased Plays: Grouplove, Bonnie Raitt, Mat Nathanson, Ed Sheeran, Keane, Alabama Shakes, Graffiti6, Good Old War, Alejandro Escovedo and Grace Potter & The Nocturnals
New & Active: Blind Pilot, Matt Nathanson, Emeli Sande, JD McPherson, Mayer Hawthorne, The Parlotones and Bonnie Raitt

SALES HIGHLIGHTS:
This week’s chart headline only scratches the surface of the sales week Norah Jones had as her album Little Broken Hearts debuts at #2 on the Billboard Top 200 with 109,793 units. This is the 4th Norah album to debut in the Top 3 but only the first to debut as the #1 Rock Album. Along with being on Billboard’s Top 200 at #2, here are some other Norah sales hightlights: Top Current Albums #2, Overall Physical Albums #3, Overall Digital Top Internet Albums #1, Top Vinyl Albums #3 and Current Rock Albums #1. Seems Norah and my sister have something in common.

Also making the Billboard Top 200 are: Adele (that’s 63 weeks!), Jason Mraz, Train, Bonnie Raitt, Black Keys, Alabama Shakes, Rufus Wainwright, Fun., Coldplay, Civil Wars, Counting Crows, Bon Iver and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Billboard Heatseekers this week is growing with even more Triple A acts including: Imgaine Dragons (still in the top 5!), Grouplove, Ed Sheeran, Delta Spirit, Scars on 45, Kimbra, J.D. McPherson, Yuna, Beverly McClellan, Dry the River and a Debut by the Pierces.

Greg Laswell’s latest single “Come Back Down” was recently the iTunes Single of the Week and had over 300,000 downloads while Greg’s album Landline hit #1 on the iTunes Singer/Songwriter Album chart and Top 15 iTunes Overall Albums chart. Laswell debuted #6 on the Billboard Folk Albums Chart, Top 20 on the Billboard Top Indie Albums Chart, #6 Billboard Folk Albums chart, #33 Billboard Rock Albums chart, and Top 100 on both the Billboard 200 and Billboard Top Current Albums charts—all career bests for Laswell who previously had a Top 5 hit at Triple A.

JD McPherson
**** (4 Stars) Okie former art teacher leads one-man rock ‘n’ roll crusade.
While soul, folk and even Jazz have enjoyed recent spurts of lucrative revivalism, rock ‘n’ roll (in its purest sense) has yet to be fully resurrected and re-flogged to a new audience. Enter Oklahoma’s JD McPherson, a man determined to celebrate the joyousness of old school rhythm ‘n’ blues and 1950’s boogie in the most uproarious manner possible. McPherson’s fiery zeal is evident on this debut translating the music into a modern context in an infectious manner similar to that displayed by ex-Rounder labelmate James Hunter. Strident, honking opener North Side Gal sets the tone for the 11 tracks that follow. (McPherson) evokes the spirit of Ruth Brown, Little Richard and early Elvis Presley in equal measure, ensuring that Signs & Signifiers is an utterly irresistible slicked- back triumph. -Mojo Music Magazine

Morning Parade
“‘Headlights’ has choruses to spare and will definitely blow your mind” – Q Magazine
“What do you get when you meld together the ebb and flow of 90s dance anthems with the crunch and tingle of indie rock? You get the soaring and catchy sounds of British band Morning Parade” – MTV.com
“We can never have too many thundering beats, booming choruses, and guitar-driven songs in our lives.” –NYLONmag.com

OTHER A3 NEWS:
Rebecca Ferguson, with over 400k in UK sales who is being touted by critics as the next Adele will be VH1’s You Oughta Know Artist starting in July.

Melody Gardot had her 1st major UK TV last week, making a great return to the studios at “Later with Jools Holland” to perform the 2 lead album tracks “Mira” and her single currently out at A3 “Amalia.

The Villains single 'Rainy Day Girl’ will be featured on American Airline flights, nestled between Snow Patrol and Whitney Houston running from mid-May to mid-June.

Paul Kelly has a new album coming November 6th and ramping up for that release, Paul is appearing on NPR's Mountain Stage and there will be a documentary airing later this summer. Stay tuned for air dates and details.

Matt Nathanson’s new single and title track to the album “Modern Love” is enjoying the fruits of Matt’s many labors. The singer has performed on Conan, Letterman, Kimmel, Leno, Daytrotter, Live at Daryl’s House, The Onion’s A/V Club, PBS’ Sun Sessions, TEDx, VH1, TV’s #1 show Dancing with the Stars, and more. “Modern Love” debuted #4 on the Billboard Rock Albums chart and #1 on the iTunes Pop Albums chart.

Brussels, Belgium may not be known for producing great rock and roll bands, but don't tell that to Black Box Revelation. The duo, 22-year-old Jan Paternoster and his 20-year-old sidekick Dries Van Dijck, have been playing together for a nearly a decade and already have two gritty guitar-rock albums to their credit in Europe. On June, 12, 2012, they'll be releasing their US album debut, My Perception, stateside through Merovee Records and the album's first single, "High on a Wire,” is out now. Kicking off their US tour in mid-May with East Coast dates, Black Box Revelation will make their Bonnaroo debut on June 10 on "That" stage.

There is a correction to the latest M:M Music Meeting CD Vol. 22. The title of the Dunwells album is Blind Sighted Faith.
